Paga Taverns on Gor

SEE ALSO Tavern Names

Basics of Paga Taverns
Paga taverns serve Paga.
Some, such as the Green Tarn Tavern in Ar also serve some food.
Paga taverns are run by the Proprietor, a man who is of the Merchant caste.
The proprietors own several paga slaves to serve the patrons.

Paga taverns exist for the pleasures of men.
Such places, regardless of their cost, their location, their appointments, the excellence of their food and drink, the beauty of their slaves, the quality of their music, existed, as did the tavern of Hendow, for the pleasures of men.

From dingy & smelling to opulent
The Tavern of Spindius in Ar is described as smelling, dingy, cheap.
At a Paga Tavern, one near the great gate, cheap and crowded, dingy and smelling, a place frequented by strangers and small Merchants, the Assassin took the girl by the arm and thrust her within.

Mention of most prestigious taverns
This was not much different, incidentally, than what was the case in even the most prestigious paga taverns. In such places free women were generally not permitted. In them, usually, the only women to be found would be collared slaves, generally belonging either to the tavern keeper or the guests, who may have brought them in, to avail themselves of the facilities of the alcoves. In such places, the mastery was practiced.

Paga taverns vary - some within lofty towers, some near wharves
Some have a dozen musicians, some have only a single czehar player
Some have gold chains and luxurious furs in the alcoves, some have wire and straw mats

Such places, regardless of their cost, their location, their appointments, the excellence of their food and drink, the beauty of their slaves, the quality of their music, existed, as did the tavern of Hendow, for the pleasures of men. That was the purpose of such places, whether they were within lofty towers, reached by graceful bridges, or near the wharves, close enough to hear the tide lapping at the pilings, whether they had a dozen musicians or only a single, dissolute czehar player, alone with his music, whether the girls were richly silked or stark naked, save for brands and collars, whether there were chains of gold and luxurious furs in the alcoves or only wire and straw mats. They were paga slaves.

Some paga taverns are described as "the most expensive"
On the whole, however, the Players live extremely poorly. Further, there is a harsh competition among themselves, for positions in certain streets and on certain bridges. The most favorable locations for play are, of course , the higher bridges in the vicinity of the richer cylinders, the most expensive Paga taverns, and so on. These positions, or territories, are allotted by the outcome of games among the Players themselves. In Ar, the high bridge near the Central Cylinder, housing the palace of the Ubar and the meeting place of the city's High Council, was held, and had been for four years, by the young and brilliant, fiery Scormus of Ar.

Some paga taverns have "themes"
The Green tarn tavern is decorated to please the fans of the Green Tarn racing team in Ar.

The Chatka & Curla tavern on Cos has a Wagon Peoples theme.

Paga taverns are common in cities & towns
Making the rounds of taverns in cylinders in Ko-ro-ba
I could remember something of the night before, but not much. The Older Tarl and I had made a round of taverns in the various cylinders, and I recall toddling precariously, singing obscene camp lyrics along different narrow bridges, about a yard wide without rails, and the earth somewhere below - how far I had no idea at the time.

And rounds of taverns in Laura
It is said that the tarn knows who is a tarnsman and who is not, and if one approaches him who is not, he will seize him and rip him to pieces. It is little wonder that few men approach the beasts. I had seem tarn keepers, but , except for Haakon of Skjern, I had seen no tarnsmen. They were wild men, of the caste of warriors, who spent much of their time in the taverns of Laura, fighting and gambling and drinking, while slave girls, excited and with shining eyes, served them and pressed about them, begging to be noticed and ordered to the alcoves. It was no wonder that some men, even warriors, hated and envied the arrogant, regal tarnsmen, one night rich, the next impoverished, always at the elbow of adventure, and war and pleasure, wearing their pride and their manhood in their walk, in the steel at their side and the look in their eyes.

Service in Paga Taverns
In some taverns paga is served in a bowl - such as the Tavern of Spindius in Ar.

In some taverns the paga is served in cups and goblets - such as The Belled Collar in Ar and The Tavern of Sarpedon in Lydius.

In some taverns the paga slaves carry the vessels to the customer at the table and fill them there from paga flasks - such as in The Tavern of Spindius in Ar.

In some taverns the paga slaves carry paga in large bronze paga vessels from table to table to serve and refill, such as in The Belled Collar in Ar.

In some taverns, the proprietor fills the cups at the counter and the paga slaves carry them to the customers - such as in this tavern in Port Kar -

Nude slave girls, wrists chained, hurried about. The Proprietor, sweating, aproned, was tipping yet another great bottle of paga in its sling, filling cups, that they might be borne to the drinkers. There was an occasional scream from the alcoves, bringing laughter from the tables. I heard the flash of a whip somewhere, and the cries of a girl.
Raiders

And this one, the tavern of Pembe in Schendi
“What is going on here?” cried the proprietor of the tavern, who had come in earlier, and was now behind the counter, ladling out paga.

The appearance of paga slaves
In some taverns the paga slaves wear silks - such as in The Tavern of Spindius in Ar.

In many, these silks are yellow, though in the Green Tarn tavern in Ar they are green.

In some taverns, especially low ones, the slaves serve nude.

In a tavern in Telnus on Cos, with a theme of Wagon Peoples, the slaves are dressed as slaves of the Nomads - The Chatka & Curla

Use of paga slaves
In most paga taverns, the use of a paga slave comes with the price of a cup of paga. A customer may use one girl per cup he purchases.

In many taverns, the use of a dancing girl in the alcoves costs extra.

In the Tavern of Sarpedon in Lydius, there is no extra charge to take a dancer to the alcoves.

Free Women
In most paga taverns, free women are not permitted.

In some, such as the Chatka & Curla in Telnus, they are.

Private serving rooms
Some have private serving rooms
"The temporary headquarters of the forces of the Vosk League," he said to me, "will be in the private serving room of the tavern of Tasdron. You know the place."
"Of course," I said. We had met there, many times.
