The finest wool is sheared in the spring from the bellies of hurt and verr
Colorful skeins, dyed in bright colors
SEE ALSO Dyes on Gor The dyes used in the malting of these rugs are, on the whole, natural
dyes, vegetable dyes, some made from barks and leaves, and roots and flowers,
others from animal products, crushed insects, etc. At various places in the
bazaar, from a latticework laid between the buildings, numerous skeins of
wool hung, dyed in various bright colors, drying. ...
.
I looked up at skeins of wool hanging from the wooden poles between
the flat roofs. They were quite colorful. The finest wool, however, is
sheared in the spring from the bellies of the verr and hurt, and would,
accordingly, not be available until later in the season. The wool market,
as was to be expected, was now slow.
Tribesmen
Standing afoot, in the dust, with his lance, the nomad watched us turn
away. Behind him was a herd of eleven verr, browsing on brownish snatches
of verr grass. He would have defended the small animals with his life. Their
milk and wool was his livelihood, and that of his family.

Hurt Ranches
Large fenced ranches in the environs of several of Gor's northern cities
Hurt replaces its wool 4 times a year Cernus of Ar wore a coarse black robe, woven probably from the wool of
the bounding, two-legged Hurt, a domesticated marsupial raised in large
numbers in the environs of several of Gor's northern cities. The Hurt,
raised on large, fenced ranches, herded by domesticated sleen and sheared
by chained slaves, replaces its wool four times a year. The House of
Cernus, I had heard, had interests in several of the Hurt Ranches near
the city. The black of the garment of Cernus was broken only by three
stripes of silk sewn lengthwise on his left sleeve, two stripes of blue
enclosing one of yellow.
Assassin
Bares returned in a moment with a heavy pair of largehandled iron shears,
procured from the nearby equipment shed. They were of the sort which could
be used for shearing the wool of the bounding hurt. The Lady Florence did
not raise hurt, though some were raised on nearby ranches. Miles of Vonda,
for example, raised hurt as well as tharlarion.

I, too, was a member of the Council of Captains, Bosk, of the House of
Bosk, if Port Kar. I wore a white robe, woven of the wool of the Hurt,
imported from distant Ar, trimmed with golden cloth, from Tor, the colors
of the Merchant. But beneath my robe I wore a tunic of red, that color
of the warriors.
Hunters
Wool blankets I did not speak to her but went to the dark blanket which lay to one
side on the straw. I spread the blanket, which was heavy, and fashioned
from the wool of the bounding hurt, on the straw.
Fighting Slave
Slave tunics
His slave, Cara, in a brief woolen tunic, one-piece, woven of the wool of
the Hurt, sleeveless, barefoot on the deck, graced by his collar, stood
behind him and to his left.
Hunters
Ribbon of wool, dyed blue It was Luma, the chief scribe of my house, in her blue robe and sandals.
Her hair was blond and straight, tied behind her head with a ribbon of blue
wool, from the bounding Hurt, dyed in the blood of the Vosk sorp.
Marauders
Kirtle of wool Her kirtle was of the finest wool of Ar, dyed scarlet, with black trimmings.

The market for wool
Wool imported from distant Ar I, too, was a member of the Council of Captains, Bosk, of the House of
Bosk, if Port Kar. I wore a white robe, woven of the wool of the Hurt,

Wools being exported, in bulk, upriver to Laura We passed great piles of rough goods, which, later, would be loaded on
barges, for transport upriver to Laura, tools, metals, woolens.

Raw wool being sold at one of the Sardar Fairs
SEE ALSO Sardar Fairs Many are the objects for sale at the fair. I passed among
wines and textiles and raw wool, silks, and brocades,
copperware and glazed pottery, carpets and tapestries,
lumber, furs, hides, salt, arms and arrows, saddles and
harness, rings and bracelets and necklaces, belts and
sandals, lamps and oils, medicines and meats and grains,
animals such as the fierce tarns, Gor’s winged mounts, and
tharlarions, her domesticated lizards, and long chains of
miserable slaves, both male and female.

Caravans import wool to the desert cities In turn, of course, caravans export the products of the oases. To the
oases caravans bring various goods, for example, rep-cloth, embroidered
cloths, silks, rugs, silver, gold, jewelries, mirrors, kailiauk tusk,
perfumes, hides, skins, feathers, precious woods, tools, needles, worked
leather goods, salt, nuts and spices, jungle birds, prized as pets, weapons,
rough woods, sheets of tin and copper, the tea of Bazi, wool from the
bounding Hurt, decorated, beaded whips, female slaves, and many other
forms of merchandise.
Tribesmen
Merchants known for being involved in the trade of wool “Forty tarsks,” repeated Procopius Minor, Little Procopius. He
was little,
it might be mentioned, only in commercial significance, compared to
Procopius Major, or Big Procopius. Big Procopius was one of the foremost
merchants in Port Kar. Paga taverns were only one of his numerous
interests. He was also involved in hardware, paper, wool and salt. Little
Procopius was not little physically. He was a large, portly fellow.
To be sure, however, Procopius Major was a bit larger, even physically.
Explorers
I knew the Four Chains. It was owned by Procopius Minor. It was near
Pier Sixteen. Procopius Minor is not to be confused with Procopius Major,
who is an important merchant in Port Kar, one with interests not only in
taverns but in paper, hardware, wool and salt.
