Short sword and spear are traditional weapons of Warriors Further, the heavy, bronze-headed spear and the short, double-edged steel
sword are traditionally regarded as the worthy, and prime, weapons of the
Gorean fighting man, he at least who is a true fighting man;
Raiders
Short, stabbing sword My training in the short, stabbing sword of the Goreans was
as thorough as they could make it.
Tarnsman
Double-edged
20 - 22 inches in length In the bundle, wrapped inside the tunic and cloak I found the shoulder belt,
sheath and short sword of the Goreans. I took the blade from its sheath. It
was well balanced, vicious, double-edged and about twenty to twenty-two inches
in length. I knew the handle, and I could recognize certain marks on the
blade. It was the weapon I had carried at the siege of Ar. It felt strange
to hold it again in my hand, to feel its weight, the familiar grasp of the
hilt.
Outlaw
Wine tempered I had again my sword, that wine-tempered blade of fine, double-edged Gorean
steel, carried even at the siege of Ar, so long ago, with its scabbard;
Raiders
Worn slung over left shoulder The man who called out wore a robe of checkered red and yellow squares, and
the game board, of similar squares, with ten ranks and ten files, giving a
hundred squares, hung over his back; slung over his left shoulder, as a
warrior wears a sword, was a leather bag containing the pieces, twenty to a
side, red and yellow, representing Spearmen, Tarnsmen, the Riders of the High
Tharlarion, and so on.
Assassin
Kuurus stood up and stretched. He picked up his short sword in its scabbard,
his helmet and his shield. These he slung over his left shoulder.
Assassin
He looked at me, confused, and then turned and stumbled away down the
hall. Somewhere I heard a girl screaming in fear.
I dressed, and slung the sword over my left shoulder.
Raiders
A door at the side opened and Tab strode in, his sword over his left
shoulder. "I am sorry, Captain," said he, "I was attending my ship."
Raiders
The men, saving the one called Targo, wore tunics, with helmets. They
looked rather frightening. The opening in the helmets reminded me vaguely of
a "Y". The swords they carried in scabbards slung over their left shoulder.
They wore heavy sandals, laced with thick straps, more than a foot up their
leg.
Captive
I felt the sand of the beach, beneath my feet. I now slung the sword over
my left shoulder, in the Gorean fashion.
Hunters
Sword belt around waist He unbuckled his own sword belt and buckled it about me. He drew the sword.
I smiled. It was my own, carried even at the siege of Ar, so many long years
ago.
"Thank you," said I, "Ho-Tu."
He resheathed the blade in my scabbard.
He was now buckling about his waist the sword and belt of Vancius.
Assassin
The men then removed their sword belts, holding the short swords and
scabbards in their left hand, the belts in their right.
Captive
I drew my sword, lifting it easily from the sheath. It
cleared the leather as easily and swiftly as a larl might
have bared its fangs. In the blue torchlight I examined the
blade and the light coat of oil that protected it. I tried
the balance, and dropped the steel back into its sheath. I
was satisfied.
I liked the blade which seemed so simple and efficient
compared to the manifold variations in sword steel that were
possible. I supposed one of the reasons for the short blade
was that it could clear the sheath a fraction of a second
before a longer blade. Another advantage was that it could
be moved with greater swiftness than a longer blade. The
primary advantage I supposed was that it allowed the Gorean
warrior to work close to his man. The brief reach of the
blade tended to be more than compensated for by the rapidity
with which it might be wielded and the ease with which it
might work beneath the guard of a longer weapon. If the
swordsman with a longer weapon could not finish the fight in
the first thrust or two he was a dead man.

Torvaldsland Long sword
"Who will bear your shield?" asked one of the referees.
"My weapon is my shield," I told him, lifting the sword. "He will not strike
me."
"What do you expect to do with that paring knife?" asked Bjarni of Thorstein
Camp, looking at me puzzled. He thought me mad.
"Your long sword," I told him, "is doubtless quite useful in thrusting over
the balwarks of ships, fastened together by grappling irons, as mine would not
be, but we are not now, my dear Bjarni, engaging in combat over the bulwarks
of ships."
"I have reach on you!" he cried.
"But my blade will protect me," I said. "Moreover, the arc of your stroke is
wider then mine, and your blade heavier. You shall shortly discover that I
shall be behind your guard."
Marauders
He wore beneath his cloak yellow wool, and a great belt of glistening black,
with a gold buckle, to which was attached a scabbard of oiled, black leather;
in this scabbard was a sword, a sword of Torvaldsland, a long sword, with a
jeweled pommel, with double guard.

Alar Long Sword
Besides the ax Alars are fond of the Alar sword, a long, heavy,
double-edged weapon. Their shields tend to be oval, like those of the
Turians.
